 DEVELOPMENT  KOREAN SPORTS and HISTORY

Since ancient times, Koreans have developed a martial arts-based sports culture. For example, Chunjia Ritual included physical activity, a combination of dance and singing, and old Koreans enjoyed martial arts-related physical activities, including archery, horseback riding, Taekkyeon, ssireum, watermelon, and chajeon nori. In addition, Koreans developed physical strength and teamwork through various folk games.

In the late 19th century, modern sports were introduced when the Joseon Dynasty was opened to the outside world. This served as an opportunity for the Korean Empire to establish laws and systems related to modern sports, and to strengthen the mind and body of the people by encouraging physical education by making it a component of the school curriculum.

Physical education was used as a tool to restore national sovereignty under the Japanese colonial rule. At that time, limited sports activities were allowed to Koreans due to the colonial situation. However, the March 1st Movement sparked a desire for national independence, which further revitalized sports activities. Accordingly, the Joseon Sports Association, the predecessor of the Korean Sports Association, was founded on July 13, 1920. It hosted and sponsored games consisting of various events, including the first All-Joseon Baseball Tournament. Since then, with the appearance of professional athletes, various sports events have been distributed nationwide, and public interest in sports has begun to increase.

Korean sports have been active on the international stage for the past century, demonstrating their fighting spirit, so-called hunger spirit, even in poor conditions. South Korea won two bronze medals at the 1948 London Olympics, and Yang won a gold medal in the wrestling featherweight division at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Since then, Korea has been on par with sports powers in the 1980s. Since the 2004 Athens Olympics, he has been in the top 10 in four consecutive international sports competitions.

With the successful hosting of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics, Korea was recognized as the host of international competitions. Since then, it has hosted the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, showing its capabilities as a truly advanced sports country.

In connection 토토 with various international sports events held in Korea, the improvement of Korean athletes' performance is contributing to the improvement of the sportsfolk environment while increasing public interest in sports.
